Shipping Household Goods from UAE to Sri Lanka (2026)

Moving from the UAE to Sri Lanka and taking your furniture, appliances and personal belongings with you?

For most households, the decision comes down to shipment volume, shipping method, destination and customs requirements.

Quick guide

If you are shipping... Usually compare...
A few boxes / small shipment Groupage / LCL
Small apartment Groupage / LCL
Medium household Groupage vs 20ft FCL
Large household 20ft FCL
Large villa 20ft vs 40ft FCL

Most sea shipments use Colombo as the main port gateway, followed by customs clearance and inland delivery to cities such as Kandy, Galle, Negombo, Jaffna and Matara.

This guide covers:

  • 2026 shipping costs
  • Groupage vs containers
  • UAE pickup
  • Sri Lanka Customs and UPB allowances
  • Appliance restrictions
  • Documents
  • Transit times
  • Major Sri Lankan destinations
  • Cars, drones and pets
  • Storage and insurance
  • How to compare movers

Important: Customs rules can change. Confirm the rules applicable to your shipment with Sri Lanka Customs or your appointed customs agent before shipping.

UAE to Sri Lanka Shipping Costs

International movers normally price household shipments according to CBM (cubic metres) rather than simply the number of bedrooms.

Indicative 2026 Planning Ranges

Shipment Approx. Volume Typical Method Indicative Cost
Small 1–5 CBM Groupage / LCL AED 4,500–6,500
Medium 5–15 CBM Groupage AED 6,500–10,000
Larger 15–25 CBM Groupage vs 20ft AED 10,000–14,000
Full household 25–35 CBM 20ft FCL AED 12,000–18,000
Large villa 35+ CBM 40ft / volume assessment AED 20,000–28,000+

These are planning ranges, not fixed tariffs.

Your actual quotation can change because of:

  • CBM and furniture dimensions
  • Packing requirements
  • UAE pickup location
  • Groupage vs FCL
  • Port charges
  • Customs clearance
  • Sri Lankan destination
  • Delivery access
  • Insurance
  • Storage

What Should Your Quote Include?

Before comparing prices, check whether the quotation includes:

Cost item Check
UAE collection Included / additional

Loading Included / additional
Ocean freight Included / additional
Port charges Included / additional

Groupage vs 20ft vs 40ft Container

Method Best for Main advantage Main drawback
Groupage / LCL Small shipments Pay for shared space More handling/consolidation
20ft FCL Medium/large homes Dedicated container Can be inefficient if under-filled
40ft FCL Large villas Maximum household capacity Higher overall cost

Groupage / LCL

Your goods share container space with other customers.

Good for:

  • Boxes
  • Clothes
  • Kitchenware
  • Books
  • Smaller furniture shipments
  • Partial household moves

Ask the mover: Is pricing based on actual CBM, chargeable CBM, minimum volume or a fixed package?

For more insights, explore our Groupage Shipping Guide.

20ft FCL

A dedicated container often makes sense for medium-to-large households.

Ask whether the container is:

  • Loaded at your residence
  • Sealed after loading
  • Transported to the export port
  • Delivered through the agreed destination process

40ft FCL

Usually considered for larger villas or households with substantial furniture.

Do not automatically choose a 40ft container. If your shipment is around 15–25 CBM, ask for both groupage and 20ft pricing first.

How Much Space Do You Need?

CBM = cubic metres.

For example:

  • 1 CBM = 1m × 1m × 1m
  • 10 CBM = ten cubic metres
  • 20 CBM = twenty cubic metres
  • 30 CBM = thirty cubic metres

Bedroom count is only a rough guide.

A lightly furnished 3-bedroom apartment may contain less than a heavily furnished 2-bedroom villa.

For an accurate quotation, request an in-home or video survey and ask for the estimated packed CBM in writing.

You can also use our Volume Calculator.

Shipping From Every UAE Emirate

UAE origin Main consideration
Dubai Major moving hub; convenient Jebel Ali access
Abu Dhabi Confirm export routing and pickup charges
Sharjah Apartment access and parking can affect loading
Ajman Suitable for groupage and FCL
Ras Al Khaimah Inland trucking may affect cost
Fujairah Confirm port and inland routing
Umm Al Quwain Price depends heavily on volume/routing
Al Ain Inland trucking to the export port may add cost

Ask: "Which UAE port will my shipment use, and is inland transportation included?"

Shipping to Major Sri Lankan Cities

Colombo is the key gateway for most sea-freight household shipments.

Destination Delivery consideration
Colombo Simplest final-mile option
Kandy Inland transport from Colombo
Galle Southern route from Colombo
Negombo Close to Colombo gateway
Jaffna Longer northern inland haul
Batticaloa Longer eastern inland haul
Kurunegala Inland delivery from Colombo area
Matara Southern route beyond Galle

For any destination outside Colombo, ask for an all-in door-to-door price, including inland delivery.

What Should You Ship?

The basic calculation is:

Replacement cost in Sri Lanka vs packed volume + shipping + customs + delivery.

Item Ship? Main consideration
Solid wood furniture Often Replacement value and volume
Sofas/bedroom furniture Often Size and condition
Kitchenware Usually Fragility
Clothing Usually Volume
Books Usually Heavy for their volume
Electronics Check first Customs and quantity
Appliances Check first Size restrictions
Alcohol Check rules carefully Customs treatment
Drones Special approval Import controls
Vehicles High-risk Import and registration rules

For fragile belongings, use professional export packing. See our Fragile Packing Guide.

Sri Lanka Customs & UPB Allowance

UPB = Unaccompanied Personal Baggage.

It covers qualifying passenger baggage travelling separately from the passenger, including by sea.

It does not mean that every item in a household shipment is automatically duty-free.

Current Adult UPB Allowance

Continuous stay abroad UPB cargo allowance
Less than 90 days USD 125
More than 90 but less than 365 days USD 500
More than 365 days USD 1,000

Sri Lanka Customs states that passenger baggage must be for personal/family use and not in commercial quantities. Goods exceeding the applicable allowance can be taxed at normal rates.

Important: UPB Arrival Window

Unaccompanied baggage can generally be landed:

30 days before → passenger arrival → 90 days after

Do not plan around a 90-day pre-arrival window.

Also Remember

Your UPB entitlement can be affected by how much of your baggage allowance you use on arrival.

If you use the full allowance at the airport, you may not have a remaining UPB allowance. If you use only part, the balance may apply to UPB.

What Happens If Goods Exceed the Allowance?

Goods exceeding the applicable concession may be assessed at normal import rates.

Your liability can depend on:

  • Item classification
  • Customs valuation
  • Quantity
  • Applicable tariff
  • Whether the item is restricted
  • Whether a permit is required

Do not rely on an old online duty estimate for a specific product. Have your customs agent confirm the applicable treatment before shipment.

Appliance Restrictions You Should Check

Sri Lanka Customs currently identifies several appliance limits under passenger baggage rules.

Item Current restriction to check
Television Over 65 inches
Refrigerator Over 600L gross capacity
Washing machine Over 10kg
Air conditioner Over 12,000 BTU
Chest freezer Listed as restricted
Dishwasher Listed as restricted

Liquor sent as unaccompanied baggage is not allowed free of duty under the Customs guidance.

Before Packing an Appliance

  1. Record make/model.
  2. Record size/capacity.
  3. Photograph the specification label.
  4. Give the details to your customs agent.
  5. Confirm treatment before shipment if the item is close to a limit.

Will UAE Appliances Work in Sri Lanka?

For most modern appliances, 230V/50Hz compatibility means many UAE appliances can operate in Sri Lanka without a voltage transformer.

Still check:

  • Voltage
  • Frequency
  • Plug
  • Manufacturer specifications
  • Age
  • Customs restrictions
  • Replacement cost

Voltage compatibility does not guarantee plug compatibility or Customs eligibility.

Can You Ship a Car From UAE to Sri Lanka?

Vehicle imports are much more complicated than household goods.

Sri Lanka's Department of Motor Traffic states that left-hand-drive vehicles are not registered in Sri Lanka.

Before shipping a UAE vehicle, confirm:

  • Import eligibility
  • Import permits
  • Taxes
  • Vehicle age rules
  • Customs valuation
  • Registration requirements
  • Compliance requirements

Do not ship the vehicle until a qualified Sri Lankan import/registration professional confirms that the specific vehicle can be legally imported and registered.

Review our Vehicle Shipping Services.

Can You Ship a Drone?

Do not treat a drone as ordinary household electronics.

Depending on the drone and intended use, import permissions can involve authorities including:

  • Ministry of Defence
  • Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka
  • TRCSL
  • Import & Export Control

Before shipment: identify the exact model → check approval requirements → obtain required permissions → provide documentation to your mover/customs agent.

Shipping Furniture From Dubai

Furniture is worth shipping when its value justifies the space it occupies.

Usually worth considering Often better to sell
Premium solid wood Cheap flat-pack furniture
High-value furniture Damaged furniture
Sentimental pieces Extremely bulky low-value items
Expensive-to-replace items Items unlikely to fit your new home

A large sofa or wardrobe can consume significant CBM. Measure it rather than estimating based on room count.

Documents Required

Your exact requirements depend on your circumstances, but commonly include:

Document Why it matters
Passport Identity/passenger verification
Packing list Identifies shipment contents
Bill of Lading Shipping document
Customs declaration Required for clearance
Proof of stay abroad May be relevant to allowance
Authorization / POA If a representative handles clearance
Permits For controlled/restricted goods

Make Your Packing List Specific

Avoid:

"20 boxes household items"

Use descriptions such as:

1 × 55-inch television
1 × three-seat sofa
1 × dining table
6 × dining chairs
8 × cartons of books

This makes it easier to identify restricted or potentially taxable goods before shipment.

UAE-to-Sri Lanka Shipping Timeline

Stage Typical planning time
Quote/survey/booking 1–7 days
Packing/loading 1–2 days
UAE export/port handling Several days
Ocean transit Around 8–14 days on many sailings
Customs/UPB clearance Depends on documentation and clearance
Final delivery After release

Realistic Door-to-Door Time

For many household moves, 3–5 weeks is a sensible planning range, but it is not a guarantee.

Allow more time for:

  • Groupage consolidation
  • Transshipment
  • Sailing changes
  • Customs inspection
  • Missing documents
  • Inland delivery
  • Storage requirements

Always ask for:

Port-to-port: UAE port → Colombo

Door-to-door: UAE home → Sri Lankan home

Storage & Insurance

If your Sri Lankan home is not ready, ask about:

  • UAE origin storage
  • Destination storage
  • Delayed delivery
  • Warehouse charges
  • Container detention/demurrage
  • Free storage periods

Planned warehouse storage is often preferable to letting a container sit while charges accumulate.

Explore our Storage Solutions.

Insurance

Ask whether marine/transit insurance covers:

  • Packing
  • Loading
  • Ocean transit
  • Water damage
  • Electrical items
  • Fragile goods
  • Final delivery

Also ask about exclusions, deductibles and claims procedures.

See our Shipping Insurance Guide.

  4. Who handles Sri Lanka Customs?
  5. What happens if Customs charges additional duty?
  6. What insurance is available?
  7. What happens if my home is not ready?

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to ship household goods from Dubai to Sri Lanka?

Small shipments may fall around AED 4,500–10,000 for initial planning, while larger moves can reach AED 12,000–28,000+. Your actual quotation depends on CBM, packing, shipping method, pickup and destination.

How much does it cost to ship furniture from Dubai to Colombo?

It depends on the furniture's packed volume. A few pieces may suit groupage; a full household may justify a 20ft or 40ft container.

What is the cheapest way to move household goods from UAE to Sri Lanka?

Compare groupage for smaller shipments and 20ft FCL for larger shipments. Around the 15–25 CBM range, ask the mover to price both.

How long does a container take from Jebel Ali to Colombo?

Ocean transit can be around 8–14 days on many services. Door-to-door delivery takes longer because packing, export handling, customs and inland delivery are additional stages.

Can I ship household goods to Kandy from Dubai?

Yes. The shipment can clear through the Colombo gateway and then travel inland to Kandy. Request an all-in delivery quotation.

Can I ship household goods to Galle from Dubai?

Yes. Ask whether inland delivery to Galle is included rather than comparing only ocean freight.

Can I ship to Jaffna from Dubai?

Yes, but the inland haul is longer. Get a complete door-to-door quotation.

Can I ship a TV to Sri Lanka?

Yes, subject to Customs rules. Televisions exceeding 65 inches are among the items restricted under the passenger baggage rules.

Can I ship a refrigerator?

Check capacity first. Refrigerators exceeding 600L gross capacity are among the listed restrictions.

Can I ship a washing machine?

Check capacity. Washing machines exceeding 10kg are among the listed restrictions.

Can I ship alcohol?

Do not assume it will receive duty-free treatment. Sri Lanka Customs states that liquor sent as unaccompanied baggage is not allowed free of duty.

Can I ship a drone?

Possibly, but obtain the required approvals before shipment.

Can I ship my UAE car?

Vehicle importation is subject to separate rules, and Sri Lanka does not register left-hand-drive vehicles. Confirm eligibility before shipping.

Do I need to be in Sri Lanka when the shipment arrives?

Do not assume that you must personally attend every clearance step. If you will not be available, ask your customs agent in advance about representation and authorization requirements.

What happens if my shipment exceeds my UPB allowance?

The excess can be assessed at normal applicable rates. The amount depends on the goods and applicable tariff/classification.

Should I ship everything from Dubai?

No.

Use this simple test:

High replacement value + low/moderate volume = consider shipping

Low replacement value + high volume = consider selling

The Bottom Line

For most UAE-to-Sri Lanka household moves:

1. Measure your shipment → 2. Compare groupage and FCL → 3. Check UPB eligibility → 4. Verify restricted items → 5. Get an itemised door-to-door quote.

If your shipment is small, start with groupage/LCL.

If you are around 15–25 CBM, compare groupage against a dedicated 20ft container.

For large villas, compare 20ft and 40ft options based on actual packed volume.

Most importantly, confirm your Sri Lanka Customs/UPB eligibility and cargo arrival window before your shipment leaves the UAE.
