Moving from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or another UAE emirate to Malta?

For most households, sea freight is the practical option for moving furniture and personal belongings. Malta's Transfer of Residence rules can also provide important relief for qualifying used household goods when you are genuinely relocating your normal residence from outside the EU.

But there are three things to plan carefully:

  1. Your residence/visa route
  2. Your customs eligibility
  3. How much of your UAE household is actually worth shipping

Whether you're moving to Valletta, Sliema, St Julian's, Mosta, Mellieħa, Marsaskala or Gozo, the right shipment strategy can save thousands of dirhams.

1. How Much Does It Cost to Move from UAE to Malta?

Your final price depends primarily on shipment volume, packing, container type, UAE origin, Malta destination and delivery access.

Indicative 2026 Planning Ranges

Household Approx. shipment Method Planning range
Studio / 1-bedroom Up to ~5 CBM LCL AED 9,000–13,000
2-bedroom ~10–15 CBM LCL / FCL comparison AED 12,000–18,000
2–3 bedroom ~15–25 CBM 20ft FCL / LCL AED 17,000–24,000
4+ bedroom villa ~30–60+ CBM 40ft FCL AED 26,000–35,000+

Important: These are planning ranges, not guaranteed market quotations.

Your actual quotation can change because of:

  • Packed CBM
  • Packing requirements
  • UAE pickup location
  • LCL vs FCL
  • Port charges
  • Customs clearance
  • Malta delivery location
  • Difficult access
  • Storage
  • Insurance
  • Furniture dismantling/reassembly
  • Special or restricted goods

The Best Way to Compare Quotes

Ask every mover for:

Packed CBM + shipping method + inclusions + exclusions + door-to-door price

A low port-to-port quote isn't necessarily cheaper than a higher door-to-door quote.

2. LCL vs FCL: Which Should You Choose?

Option Best for Main advantage Main drawback
LCL / Groupage Small shipments Lower total cost Shared container / more handling
20ft FCL Medium households Dedicated container Inefficient if significantly under-filled
40ft FCL Large homes Maximum capacity Higher cost
Air freight Urgent essentials Fast Expensive

LCL / Groupage

Best when you are shipping:

  • Boxes
  • Clothes
  • Books
  • Kitchenware
  • Smaller furniture
  • Part of your household

Ask whether the quote has a minimum chargeable CBM.

FCL

A dedicated container makes more sense for a larger household.

Don't choose a 20ft or 40ft container simply because of your bedroom count.

Choose based on your actual packed volume.

Air Freight

Use air freight selectively for:

  • Documents
  • Work equipment
  • Essential clothing
  • Children's essentials
  • Medication
  • Items needed immediately

A useful strategy is:

Air freight the essentials + sea freight the household.

3. How Much Space Do You Need?

CBM = cubic metres.

For example:

  • 1 CBM = 1m × 1m × 1m
  • 10 CBM = ten cubic metres
  • 20 CBM = twenty cubic metres

Bedroom count is only an estimate.

A heavily furnished 2-bedroom UAE apartment may require more space than a lightly furnished 3-bedroom home.

For an accurate quotation:

Inventory → survey → packed CBM estimate → itemised quotation

Use our Volume Calculator.

4. Moving From Dubai, Abu Dhabi & Other UAE Emirates

UAE origin What to consider
Dubai Major international moving hub; Jebel Ali is the key export gateway
Abu Dhabi Confirm inland transport and export routing
Sharjah Check apartment loading/parking restrictions
Ajman Compare pickup charges
Ras Al Khaimah Inland transport can affect pricing
Fujairah Confirm export routing
Umm Al Quwain Confirm pickup costs
Al Ain Additional inland transport to the export port may apply

5. Moving to Valletta, Sliema, St Julian's & Gozo

Your Malta delivery address matters.

Older and densely built parts of Malta can have:

  • Narrow streets
  • Limited parking
  • Restricted loading
  • Small lifts
  • Stair-only access
  • Difficult furniture access

Before the shipment leaves the UAE, give your mover:

  • Full address
  • Building name
  • Apartment number
  • Floor
  • Lift availability
  • Lift dimensions if possible
  • Parking/loading instructions
  • Property manager contact
  • Delivery restrictions

Areas Commonly Chosen by UAE Expats

Destination What to consider
Valletta Historic buildings, restricted vehicle access
Sliema Dense apartment market
St Julian's Modern apartments and busy streets
Gżira Dense urban environment
Mosta More residential
Mellieħa Further from the main urban area
Marsaskala Residential/coastal
Gozo Additional island logistics

Important: A 40ft container may not be able to reach your property directly. Your mover may need a smaller vehicle for the final delivery leg.

6. Malta Transfer of Residence: Can You Avoid Import Duty?

Potentially, yes — if you qualify.

Malta Customs provides import-duty relief for qualifying personal and household belongings when a person transfers their normal residence from outside the EU to Malta.

The key requirements include:

Requirement Current rule
Previous residence Outside the EU
Minimum period outside EU 12 continuous months
Goods Used personal/household belongings
Ownership Generally at least 6 months before export
Intended use Same purpose in Malta
Sale/transfer Restricted for 12 months after entry into free circulation
New goods Not automatically covered
Food/alcohol/tobacco Relief does not generally apply
Restricted goods Separate rules

Important Correction

The rule is not simply:

"I lived in the UAE for 12 months, therefore everything I ship is tax-free."

The goods themselves must satisfy the applicable conditions.

Malta Customs also states that new items are subject to duty and VAT and must be declared separately.

The 6-Month Rule

The qualifying belongings must generally have been owned for at least six months before exportation.

So buying an expensive sofa in Dubai shortly before your relocation does not automatically make it eligible for the relief.

Keep your purchase documentation.

7. How Long Can You Keep Goods Under the Relief?

One important condition is often overlooked.

Goods imported under the relief generally cannot be sold, lent, hired out or given as security during the first year after entering EU free circulation.

This matters if you're planning to sell furniture shortly after moving to Malta.

8. What Documents Do You Need?

A typical customs file can include:

  • Passport/ID
  • Proof of residence outside the EU for the previous 12 months
  • Residence documentation in Malta
  • Detailed valued packing list
  • Customs declaration
  • Notice of arrival
  • Authorisation letter if an agent clears the goods for you

The exact document package depends on your circumstances and customs procedure.

Build Your Packing List Properly

Avoid:

20 boxes – household goods

Use:

1 × 3-seat sofa
1 × dining table
6 × dining chairs
2 × wardrobes
1 × television
8 × cartons – books
6 × cartons – clothing

A detailed inventory helps your customs agent identify goods that require special treatment.

9. Is Transfer of Residence Relief the Same as "No Tax"?

Not exactly.

Think about it as conditional customs/tax relief, not a blanket "Malta is tax-free" rule.

Usually easier

  • Used furniture
  • Used clothing
  • Used books
  • Normal household items
  • Personal effects

Requires extra checking

  • New furniture
  • Food
  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco
  • Plants
  • Animal products
  • Medicines
  • Weapons
  • Vehicles
  • Other restricted goods

10. What Should You Ship From the UAE?

Malta is a relatively small market and homes can be smaller than UAE villas and apartments.

Consider Shipping

Item Verdict Why
Quality furniture ✅ Ship Replacement cost can justify freight
Sentimental furniture ✅ Ship Difficult to replace
Compact appliances ✅ Consider Useful if compatible
Books ✅ Ship Usually straightforward
Clothing ✅ Ship Especially seasonal clothing
Oversized furniture ⚠️ Measure first May not fit Malta property
Cheap flat-pack furniture ❌ Often sell Replacement may cost less
Damaged items ❌ Usually sell Freight isn't worth it

The Rule

High replacement value + reasonable volume = ship

Low replacement value + high volume = sell

11. UAE Appliances in Malta

Malta uses 230V / 50Hz and Type G plugs, which is compatible with the standard UAE electrical system.

So many UAE appliances can be used in Malta without a voltage converter.

Still check:

  • Appliance label
  • Plug
  • Frequency
  • Warranty
  • Condition
  • Size
  • Replacement cost

Measure Large Appliances

Before shipping:

Measure → compare with Malta home → check door/lift → then decide.

This is particularly important for:

  • Refrigerators
  • Washing machines
  • Dryers
  • Large TVs
  • American-style appliances

12. What About Cars?

A UAE vehicle can potentially be imported into Malta, but it should be treated as a separate financial calculation from your household shipment.

Malta requires imported vehicles from outside the EU to satisfy registration, inspection, customs and conformity requirements.

Malta drives on the left-hand side of the road.

Before Shipping a UAE Car

Check:

  • Vehicle eligibility
  • Left/right-hand-drive configuration
  • EU conformity requirements
  • CO₂/emissions requirements
  • Customs treatment
  • Registration tax
  • Inspection requirements
  • Insurance
  • Annual licensing costs

An Important Transfer of Residence Point

Malta Customs has specific provisions for qualifying private motor vehicles transferred as part of a change of residence, subject to the applicable conditions.

So don't automatically assume:

"UAE car = import tax."

Instead calculate:

Shipping + customs + registration tax + compliance + insurance + modifications

versus:

Selling the UAE vehicle + buying/leasing in Malta.

For many vehicles, the second option may be more practical.

Review our Vehicle Shipping Services.

13. Malta Visa & Residence Options for UAE Expats

Shipping your belongings is only half the relocation.

Your residence route determines whether and how you can legally live and work in Malta.

Nomad Residence Permit

The Nomad Residence Permit is designed for eligible non-EU nationals who work remotely for employers, companies or clients outside Malta.

The current minimum gross annual income requirement is:

€42,000 per year

The programme also requires, among other things:

  • Valid travel document
  • Suitable accommodation
  • Health insurance
  • Evidence of qualifying remote work
  • Required application documentation

The current €42,000 threshold is important because older online guides still quote lower income figures.

Best suited to

  • Remote employees
  • Freelancers
  • Business owners
  • Entrepreneurs working with foreign clients

Global Residence Programme

The Global Residence Programme (GRP) is a different type of programme aimed at qualifying non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals.

It provides a special tax framework rather than simply functioning as a generic "digital nomad visa."

The programme can involve:

  • Qualifying property
  • Minimum rental/purchase conditions
  • Health insurance
  • Tax obligations
  • A 15% rate on qualifying foreign-source income remitted to Malta, subject to the programme's conditions and minimum tax rules

The exact property thresholds depend on the location and whether the property is rented or purchased.

Do not choose this route purely because you saw "15% tax" in an article.

Your personal tax position should be assessed before relying on the scheme.

Key Employee Initiative (KEI)

The Key Employee Initiative is a fast-track employment route for eligible third-country nationals taking qualifying managerial or highly technical roles in Malta.

The current salary threshold is:

€45,000 gross per year

Other eligibility requirements apply, including relevant qualifications or experience and a qualifying job offer.

Best suited to

  • Senior technology professionals
  • Highly specialised employees
  • Finance professionals
  • Technical specialists
  • Other qualifying high-skilled roles

14. Which Malta Route Might Suit You?

Your situation Route to investigate
Remote worker employed abroad Nomad Residence Permit
Freelancer serving foreign clients Nomad Residence Permit
High-skilled employee with Malta job KEI / Single Permit routes
Investor/high-net-worth applicant Global Residence Programme / other applicable routes
EU/EEA/Swiss citizen Different residence rules

Important: Immigration and tax programmes can change. Confirm your eligibility with the relevant Maltese authority or qualified adviser before making a relocation decision.

15. Shipping Your Pet From UAE to Malta

Pets require separate planning.

Malta applies EU animal-health and entry rules to dogs, cats and ferrets entering from non-EU countries.

Before shipping your pet, check:

  • Microchip
  • Rabies vaccination
  • Required waiting periods
  • Veterinary health documentation
  • Official veterinary certification
  • Entry-point requirements
  • Any additional requirements based on the UAE's classification at the time of travel

Do not put your pet's documentation inside your household shipment.

Start Early

Pet relocation can involve waiting periods that cannot be compressed simply by paying for faster shipping.

If you are moving with a dog or cat:

Start the pet process before booking your household shipment.

Review our Pet Relocation Services.

16. What About Food?

Do not treat food as ordinary household goods.

Malta Customs identifies food and animal products among goods that can be subject to separate controls.

Avoid automatically packing:

  • Meat
  • Poultry
  • Fresh produce
  • Seeds
  • Plants
  • Large quantities of food
  • Animal products

If you want to bring a particular food product, confirm its import requirements first.

17. Alcohol & Tobacco

Do not assume that Transfer of Residence relief covers alcohol and tobacco.

If you want to bring alcohol or tobacco, confirm the applicable duty and declaration requirements separately.

18. Shipping Timeline: Dubai → Malta

Sea freight is the normal choice for a household relocation.

Planning Timeline

Stage Typical planning
Survey & quotation 1–7 days
Decluttering 1–3 weeks
Packing 1–2 days
UAE export handling Several days
Ocean transport Variable by sailing/service
Malta customs Variable
Final delivery After cargo release

Overall Planning Range

For many UAE-to-Malta household shipments:

Allow approximately 4–6 weeks door-to-door.

The exact time can change because of:

  • Sailing schedule
  • Transshipment
  • LCL consolidation
  • Port congestion
  • Customs inspection
  • Missing documentation
  • Delivery access
  • Storage

Avoid promising a fixed "25–35 day" arrival time unless your mover has confirmed the actual sailing/service.

19. Malta Delivery: The Hidden Cost

The international ocean freight price is not always the biggest surprise.

The final delivery can become complicated because of:

  • Narrow roads
  • Historic streets
  • Parking restrictions
  • Small lifts
  • Stairs
  • Restricted access
  • Long carries
  • Smaller shuttle vehicles

Ask Your Mover

"Can your delivery truck reach my building?"

If not:

"Is a shuttle vehicle required, and is it included?"

This single question can prevent an unexpected delivery surcharge.

20. Storage in Malta

If your Malta property is not ready when your shipment arrives, arrange storage in advance.

Confirm:

  • Monthly storage rate
  • Minimum period
  • Insurance
  • Handling fees
  • Delivery after storage
  • Final-mile charges

Explore our Storage Solutions.

21. Moving Insurance

Ask whether your insurance covers:

  • Packing
  • Loading
  • Ocean freight
  • Water damage
  • Handling damage
  • Unloading
  • Storage

Also check:

  • Declared value
  • Deductible
  • Exclusions
  • Claims process
  • Electronics
  • Fragile goods

See our Shipping Insurance Guide.

Ask every mover:

1. What is my packed CBM?

Get the estimate in writing.

2. Is this LCL or FCL?

Know whether your shipment shares a container.

3. Is the quote door-to-door?

Check exactly what is included.

4. Is Malta customs clearance included?

Ask who will act as your customs agent.

5. Is final delivery included?

Especially important for Valletta, Sliema and older properties.

6. What is excluded?

Check:

  • Duties/taxes on non-qualifying goods
  • Storage
  • Insurance
  • Shuttle vehicles
  • Long carries
  • Crane/lift services
  • Special handling

24. What Does a Smart UAE → Malta Move Look Like?

Small shipment: 1–5 CBM

Declutter → LCL → ship essentials → avoid bulky low-value furniture

Medium household: 10–25 CBM

Survey → compare LCL vs 20ft FCL → measure Malta property → ship high-value furniture

Large household: 25–60+ CBM

Detailed inventory → professional packing → compare 20ft/40ft → confirm delivery access before loading

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to move from Dubai to Malta?

As a planning range, small LCL shipments may start around AED 9,000–13,000, while larger household moves can reach AED 17,000–35,000+ depending on volume, container size, packing, origin, destination and access.

What is the cheapest way to move household goods from UAE to Malta?

For small shipments, compare LCL/groupage. For larger households, compare LCL against a dedicated 20ft container. A 40ft container only makes sense if your actual volume requires it.

How long does Dubai-to-Malta shipping take?

Allow approximately 4–6 weeks door-to-door as a planning range for many sea-freight household moves. The actual time depends on the sailing schedule, consolidation, customs and delivery.

Can I import my furniture to Malta without paying import duty?

Qualifying used household and personal belongings can receive Transfer of Residence import-duty relief if you meet the applicable requirements.

The key conditions include 12 continuous months outside the EU and generally six months of ownership of the goods before export.

Does Malta's Transfer of Residence relief cover new furniture?

Generally, don't assume it does. New items should be declared and may be subject to applicable duty and VAT.

Can I sell furniture after importing it under Transfer of Residence relief?

There is a 12-month restriction on selling, lending, hiring out or giving qualifying goods as security after they enter EU free circulation.

Do I need to prove that I lived in the UAE?

Yes. You need evidence establishing your qualifying residence outside the EU.

Can I ship my car from Dubai to Malta?

Yes, potentially. But calculate customs, registration, inspection, conformity, tax and insurance costs before shipping.

Does Transfer of Residence relief apply to my car?

Malta Customs has specific provisions for qualifying private vehicles transferred as part of a change of residence, subject to the applicable conditions.

Does Malta drive on the left?

Yes. Malta drives on the left side of the road.

Can I bring UAE appliances?

Usually yes, provided they comply with applicable requirements. UAE and Malta both use 230V/50Hz systems and Type G plugs, but check each appliance individually.

Does Malta have a Digital Nomad Visa?

Malta has a Nomad Residence Permit for qualifying non-EU remote workers.

The current minimum gross annual income is €42,000.

What is the Malta Global Residence Programme?

It is a separate special tax-residence programme for qualifying non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals. It should not be confused with the Nomad Residence Permit.

What is the Key Employee Initiative salary requirement?

The current published KEI eligibility criteria include a minimum gross annual salary of €45,000. Other requirements apply.

Can I move from UAE to Gozo?

Yes. However, Gozo adds an additional island delivery leg, so confirm whether your mover includes the complete delivery to your Gozo address.

Can I move from Dubai to Valletta?

Yes. But check your exact building's loading and access restrictions before choosing your container size.

Can I move to Sliema from Dubai?

Yes. Sliema is a common expat destination, but dense urban access can make final delivery more complicated.

Can I move to St Julian's from UAE?

Yes. The same sea-freight and customs principles apply, with particular attention to apartment access and delivery scheduling.

Can I bring food from Dubai to Malta?

Some food may be subject to separate controls. Meat, poultry, animal products, plants and other controlled items require particular care. Check before packing.

Can I bring alcohol?

Do not assume that Transfer of Residence relief covers alcohol. Alcohol can be subject to separate customs and tax requirements.

Do I need a customs agent?

For a household relocation, using an experienced customs-clearing agent is strongly advisable, particularly where Transfer of Residence relief is being claimed.

The Smartest Way to Move From UAE to Malta

The cheapest UAE → Malta move is rarely the one with the lowest shipping quote.

It is the move where you ship the right belongings, use the correct customs relief and avoid unnecessary volume.

Use this process:

Nomad Permit, employment route, Global Residence Programme or another applicable pathway.

2. Check Transfer of Residence eligibility

Confirm the 12-month residence and six-month ownership requirements.

3. Declutter in the UAE

Sell bulky, inexpensive furniture.

4. Measure your Malta property

Especially doors, lifts, staircases and large furniture spaces.

Detailed inventory + proof of UAE residence + Malta residence documentation.

7. Check restricted goods

Food, alcohol, tobacco, plants, animal products, medicines and other controlled goods should be checked separately.

8. Get an itemised door-to-door quote

Make sure customs, delivery and difficult-access charges are clearly identified.
